Oakridge Pet Lost & Found

If you find or lose a pet please call  972-496-5454 or email Sherri at srutherford72@tx.rr.com. Please provide your name and contact information along with a description of the animal (breed, color, size, pet’s name) and if possible a photo.  We will immediately post this information and hopefully have pets returned to their owners in no time.   Please do not drop animals off at my house as I have a very jealous Yorkshire Terrier.

Cool DOGs

I have been taking my dogs for Training at Top Dog Training Center. You may have seen Pam Martin if you went to the State Fair of Texas last year. She has an amazing passion for what she does and her dogs respond immediately to her. See some of her videos on U-tube below. Top Dog is only a few Miles from Oakridge at Buckingham and Pleasant Valley so take your dog there today...Keith Engler

Adventures in Pet Sitting

This will likely be the title of the book Sue Hageland’ writes about her pet sitting adventures  when she retires from a second career.  Sue began her business 11 ½ years ago after she took early retirement from AT&T.  With the catchy name “Let Sue Do It” her goal was to offer services she could have used while employed outside the home.  Today, pet sitting is the largest part of her business.  Her only form of advertisement is the Oakridge Newsletter.

Not many of Sue’s clients would suspect that this Chicago native turned Texan was terrified of animals until she was 20 years old.  She overcame this fear while living with her in-laws who had a dog.  She realized it was either learn to like the dog or stand on the furniture for the next 3 months.  It’s pretty obvious the choice she made.

Sue tries to keep most of her business exclusive to Oakridge which allows her to give time to a pet’s particular likes and habits.  For example, some dogs like to stay outside for a while.  Sue can tend to another pet in the area while allowing the pet that prefers the outdoors a little longer time to stretch their legs.  Most of Sue’s clients are dogs and cats but she also has birds, fish, rabbits, hamsters and even a snake.  At home Sue has had Maltese’s for many years.

As we all know an Oakridge pet is special and Sue gives her clients – human and animal – that catered to feeling.  Some of the unusual requests Sue has encountered has been to pray with a dog; cook eggs and cereal for breakfast for another and some dogs just like their ears to flap in the wind during a nice car ride.

Sue’s rewards come from the many nice notes she gets from her human clients telling her they couldn’t have taken a vacation if she couldn’t watch their animals or the pets that resident’s are able to keep longer because Sue can check in on them when they are sick.

Sue’s has had many adventures in pet sitting but you will just have to wait for her book when she retires.  When “Let Sue Do It” doesn’t do it anymore.

PS:  I would like to personally thank Sue for helping me try to reconnect lost pets with their owners.

Loyalty

You can’t buy loyalty, they say,

I bought it though, the other day

You can’t buy friendships, tried and true

Well just the same, I bought that too.

I made my bid and on the spot

Brought love and faith and a whole job lot

Of happiness, so all in all

The purchase price was pretty small

I bought a single trusting heart,

That gave devotion from the start

If you think these things are

Not for sale

Buy a brown-eyed puppy with

A wagging tail

Foster Homes Needed!!!

Richardson Humane Society

Foster Homes look after our pets while they are awaiting adoption. After a new pet arrives with RHS, it spends a couple of days at the vet's office to get a clean bill of health and is then moved to a foster home. The foster home is responsible for looking after the pet until it is adopted.

Our intake coordinator will always try and select pets that are good matches for our foster homes and will take into account the likes, dislikes and requirements of the home when selecting new animals.

Everything you need to look after the pet is provided. This includes food, medications, treats, bowls, crate, toys, litter box, etc.

Normally, the foster home will drop the pet off at our adopt-a-pet event at 11:45 a.m. every Saturday and pick them up at 4 p.m. Assistance with transporting pets to and from our adopt-a-pet events can be arranged if needed.

Meet Bono who went from Underdog to Wonderdog...

When Lois and Vincent Golbeck braved the after Thanksgiving shopping crowd at North Park Mall in 2005 they had in mind finding bargains not a barker.  But as they passed the SPCA adoption store Vincent saw a part Yorkie, part Shitzu and maybe part something else that just seemed special.  So to home came this 21 month old dog that was named Bono after Vincent’s favorite band U2.

Bono’s laid back attitude was certainly a contrast to the other 3 dogs in the household.  But about 6 month later Bono became very lethargic and began to bloat.  The Golbeck’s veterinarian did not have good news.  It seems Bono’s liver was about ¼ the size it should be and he would not survive.

Devastated but not defeated Vincent began searching the internet and learned of an experimental procedure.  Bono was screened at a local diagnostic center and was referred to Texas A&M. There Bono underwent 2 five hour surgeries installing several stints in his liver; rerouting veins through out his internal system with up to 5 surgeons ranging from cardiologist to internist working on the little 8 lb dog.    A month later a 3rd surgery was required.

Bono was still bloating and retaining fluid and the Golbeck’s become very concerned that the 3 surgeries were not successful.  Then one evening as if a miracle occurred the fluid drained and Bono was like a new dog.  Bono while on medication for the rest of his life has come from being the laid back dog to the alpha dog to 3 larger dogs.  He has a little prance in his step (even though 1 leg is paralyzed) that lets everyone know he is #1 and special.

Now you might think Bono is one lucky dog to have the Golbecks but they will tell you they are the lucky ones.  During Bono’s entire ordeal he maintained a sweet disposition and a spirit that was an inspiration to the staff at Texas A&M and the Golbecks.  He has become very protective of his 2 masters.  So if you see the Golbecks walking their 3 dogs be most cautious of Bono the 4th dog which will be in the baby buggy.  He has already overcome bigger threats than you.
