Bring out the bikes: but
review safety rules first
from the Tennessee Department of Health
Milder temperatures mean it's time to haul those
bicycles out of the garage. But the onset of spring also should remind you to
review some biking safety rules.
The Tennessee Department of Health offers this bicycle
safety advice:
- Wear a helmet every time you ride.
- Stop at the end of the driveway to check for cars.
- Always ride on the right side of the road, even if
you're just going one block.
- Obey all traffic laws.
- Use hand signals when making a turn or stopping. Arm
straight out signals a left, bent and pointed up is a right, and bent and
pointed down is the signal to stop.
- Wear light-colored clothes and use a bright helmet.
- Yield to walkers.
- Ride predictably. Don't do anything that will startle
car drivers.
