Tips for "All the Trimmings"
Try these tips for a better, healthier trimmings this Thanksgiving:
Check out What to Do With the Leftovers.
If the recipe calls for whole milk or cream, substitute fat-free evaporated skim milk. Or, even use non-fat creamer. They won't notice the difference in pumpkin pie or mashed potatoes.
Mash baked sweet potatoes with some orange zest and cinnamon.
Lose the crust for a healthy pumpkin "pie". Cook the pumpkin pie filling in individual custard cups and top (just before serving) with lite whipped cream. The kids never liked the crust anyway!
Spray your dressing pan with butter-flavored canola spray. Sauté your onion and celery in a bit of olive oil. Use canned chicken stock to moisten the dressing before spreading it in the pan. Spray the top with a little of the butter-flavored spray before baking. With gravy on top anyway, nobody will notice you didn't use a stick or more of butter like you usually do.
Spice up your dressing by sautéing a couple of chopped jalapenos with the onions and celery! Wow!
